Final free public concert of the year by the Smoot Theatre Vocal Ensembles.
The choral groups are the Smoot Theatre Children’s Chorus, now in its 14th year, the Smoot Theatre Boys Ensemble, now in its 12th year, and the Smoot Theatre Girls Ensemble, now in its ninth year.
The Children’s Chorus will begin the concert with “Karibuni,” an African welcoming song, with soloists Scott Richardson, Kaleah Barros and Ford Schwendeman. “Karibuni” will be followed by “Pie Jesu” by Marcy Pyrtle featuring soloists Gabby Schall and Toby Wilcox.
Other selections are: “Woke Up This Mornin’,” a spiritual arranged by Rollo Dilworth; “Ain’t We Got Fun,” the classic from 1921; “Old Joe Clark,” a folk song; the contemporary “Firefly”; and ending with “Breathing With Beethoven,” an homage to the great composer.
The Girls Ensemble will present “Arise, My Love” by Laura Farnell, “I Will Be a Child of Peace” by Elaine Hagenberg, “Johnny Said NO!” by Vijay Singh, “The Seal Lullaby” by Eric Whitacre, the African greeting song “Morokeni” and ending with “As Long As I Have Music” by Besig and Price.
The 5th Street Boys performance will be followed by the ensemble presenting “That’s Why I Do Like I Do” featuring soloist Gabriel Cantwell, Stephen Foster’s “If You’ve Only Got a Mustache,” “The Parting Glass” featuring soloist Owen McCrady, “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and “Country Roads” with soloists Alex Cantwell, Jacob Daugherty and Gabriel Cantwell.
Ending the concert, all the ensembles will combine to present the traditional closing song “Why We Sing” by Greg Gilpin.
Director of the Children’s Chorus is Barbara Full and accompanist is Marsha Parsons. The Girls Ensemble is directed by Cathy Martin with accompanist Jane Irvine. Director of the Boys Ensemble is Janet Blessing with accompanist Kim Vineyard. Director of the Fifth Street Boys is Smoot Theatre Artistic Director Felice Jorgeson.
The concert is free and donations will be gratefully accepted.
